To the mothers and the fathers
The daughters and the sons
To the sisters and the brothers
The spouses and loved ones

For the dreams that you abandoned
And the nights you laid awake
For the fears you fought till morning
For your prayers to keep them safe

For the funds you found to post the bail
For food and health care costs
For hours spent in waiting rooms
For the hope you never lost

Though the thank yous never come
And sacrifices hide from view
May your faith and kind compassion
Give strength to guide you through.

May your patience still hold firm
Amid the tirades and the tears
And may God’s words “well done”
Whisper gently in your ears.
